Day-by-day itinerary

1. D1

   Flight to Jomsom and acclimatization

   Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom, enjoying spectacular aerial views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Rest and acclimatize in Jomsom, walking along the Kali Gandaki River, the world's deepest gorge and the only source of sacred Shaligram stones. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol at this altitude.

2. D2

   Drive to Muktinath and temple darshan

   Drive or trek to Muktinath through dramatic high-altitude desert landscapes. Enter the temple complex and observe the 108 bull-headed water spouts where pilgrims bathe in freezing water to cleanse sins. Visit the Jwala Mai temple to see the eternal flame burning naturally from the earth. Offer prayers at the golden Vishnu murti inside the main shrine.

3. D3

   Buddhist gompa and sacred Shaligram search

   Visit the Mharme Lhakhang Gompa where a statue of Guru Rinpoche resides. The resident nuns are considered dakinis, divine sky-dancers. Walk along the Kali Gandaki Riverbed, searching for Shaligram stones, sacred fossils considered direct manifestations of Vishnu. Each stone's unique patterns represent different avatars of the deity.

4. D4

   Return via Kagbeni and Lupra monastery

   Descend through the ancient village of Kagbeni, a medieval fortress town at the junction of the Muktinath and Kali Gandaki rivers. Visit Lupra village and its Bon-Po monastery, preserving Tibet's pre-Buddhist animist tradition. Return to Jomsom for your flight back, carrying a Shaligram as a blessing.
