Day-by-day itinerary

  1. D1

    Janakpur Heritage and Return

Spend a second day in Janakpur exploring Mithila culture — visit the Mithila Art Centre to see the world-famous Madhubani paintings, walk through the city's painted streets, and if visiting during Vivah Panchami (November-December), witness the spectacular re-enactment of the Ram-Sita wedding that draws over 100,000 pilgrims. Return to India via the same border crossing, or continue to Kathmandu (8 hours by road from Janakpur) to extend your Nepal exploration. The complete Janakpur-Ayodhya circuit represents one of Hinduism's most significant cross-border heritage corridors.

    Janakpur — The Bride's City

Arrive in Janakpur Dham, Nepal — the capital of King Janaka's ancient Mithila kingdom. Visit the grand Janaki Mandir — a white marble and stained-glass masterpiece built in 1911. Explore the Ram-Janaki Vivah Mandap, the exact site of the divine marriage between Rama and Sita. Walk to Dhanush Sagar and Ganga Sagar — ancient ponds connected to the wedding rituals. The Janakpur-Jayanagar Railway, inaugurated in 2023, connects Janakpur directly to the Indian railway network — a historic cross-border connection that pilgrims have awaited for decades.

Continue to Sitamarhi, the Indian border town associated with Sita. Cross into Nepal at the Jayanagar-Bhittamod border (now connected by the Janakpur Railway) or via the Raxaul-Birgunj crossing. Indian nationals: carry voter ID or passport. Foreign tourists: Nepal visa on arrival available. Border crossing: 1–2 hours.

In the evening, attend the Saryu Aarti — a riverside ceremony where thousands of lamps illuminate the water. Ayodhya is well-connected by road (135 km from Lucknow) and rail. The new Ayodhya International Airport connects to major Indian cities. Best time: October–March. Respect local dress codes — modest clothing recommended.
